Wandsworth’s Aaron McKibbin picked up two medals in the Slovakia Open in Bratislava, despite admitting he was not at his best.

The 23-year-old won bronze in the men’s class 8 singles and then combined with Ashley Facey Thompson to take a bronze in the men’s class 9 team event.

McKibbin topped his group in the singles with three wins from three, and received a bye into the quarter-finals where he beat Josef Krsiak from Slovakia 3-2.

In the semi-finals he faced the world champion and world number one Viktor Didukh, and the Ukrainian was too strong in a 3-0 win.

In the team event, McKibbin and Facey Thompson beat the Netherlands in their quarter-final, with McKibbin beating the talented Jean-Paul Montanus 3-0.

In their semi-final against Japan the GB pair beat Koyo Iwabuchi, but lost to Noboyuki Suzuki, making the doubles crucial and a 3-1 win for Japan ultimately decided the tie 3-2.

McKibbin said: “I feel my level wasn't great in Slovakia and I found myself having to graft out the wins.

"But I used to struggle to do that so it is a positive that I was able to get the wins when the pressure was on and I didn't feel comfortable.

"I was most pleased with my singles victory in the team event against Japan in the semi-final. It was a great atmosphere and I felt I played some good quality table tennis and produced maybe my best performance of the competition.”

The London 2012 Paralympic medalist is now looking forward to competing in the German Open at the end of the month.

“I’m looking to try and maintain my high level for a longer period,” he said.

“I feel I need to raise my level and play with more freedom and belief to produce the table tennis that the coaches and I feel I can.

"With the Chinese also competing in Germany it will be one of the strongest competitions of the year so I'm really excited to get out there and get stuck in.”
