Sutton police station was cordoned off and the bomb squad called on Saturday when a World War II hand grenade was brought in by someone who had cleared out his elderly mother's house.

A man brought the grenade in at 2.37pm.

A Sutton police spokesman said: "A number of offices at the police station were evacuated and cordons put in place to protect the public.

"Specialist explosives officers arrived and declared the grenade safe before removing it to be destroyed. The cordons were lifted by 16:00hrs."

He added: "Police advise residents that any munitions should be left where found and reported to police immediately so they can be dealt with."

It is not the first time a helpful member of the public has accidentally sparked a bomb scare.
