Schoolchildren and the mayor will officially open a controversial Aldi supermarket in Ewell next week.

The store in Kingston Road has divided opinion with some fearing it could kill off local shops and others believing it will bring more shoppers to the area.

Store manager Kapil Saini said: "We are looking forward to welcoming children from Ewell Grove Infant School to officially open our store."

Aldi is donating £250 to the school and £250 to children’s charity, Barnardos, to mark the opening on Thursday, June 11, at 8am.

Its original plans for the site in Kingston Road were rejected in 2006 and again in 2007 but the chain later won a planning appeal for the scheme.

The site was then left empty until Aldi bought up two adjacent houses and councillors approved their revised plans.

The store wants to recruit an additional 35 staff members. It will be open from 8am to 10pm every day apart from Sunday when it will open at 10am and close at 4pm.
