A Liberal Democrat leadership candidate has said his party's fightback is well under way as they look to win a Sutton Council byelection.

North Norfolk MP, Norman Lamb, joined council candidate Steve Cook for a third time this afternoon on the campaign trail ahead of the Wallington South byelection that will be held on tomorrow.

He admitted coming down to support a council byelection candidate was unusual, but said it would be the first opportunity to begin the party's fightback following a disappointing general election campaign.

The byelection is being held following the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Colin Hall.

Mr North said: "This is an opportunity to show those people who think we are dead that we are very much not.

"I regard it as a start up, we have to build following the results of the general election and show people who share our values that we represent them.

"We seek to win elections at every level and we need to take every opportunity to make our case and at every level."

Mr Cook, 63, who has lived in Wallington for 35 years, worked in sound recording for iconic movies the Godfather, Star Wars and many others, said it was a great experience to get so much support from veteran Lib Dems and added he was thrilled at the opportunity to join Sutton Council.

Mr Lamb is hoping to be elected as leader of his party and took the chance to thank those who had nominated him

He said: "I've shown I can take on politicians and win, like when I took on Tony Blair over the freedom of information act and I have campaigned for those who are mentally ill so they get the best support possible.

"And when I heard that Tom Brake came out in support of me I was thrilled as I admire what he has done during his time as MP."

Mr Lamb will go up against Tim Farron, MP for West Moreland and Lonsdale on July 16.
