The contribution of 50,000 volunteers who help out in the community each year was celebrated during volunteers week.

More than 160 volunteers attended the Big Breakfast event at the central library in Sutton last Friday, June 5, and celebrated the work done by thousands of volunteers across the borough.

Chris Parker, chief executive officer of Volunteer Centre Sutton, said: “This year, the main purpose of volunteers’ week is to thank the 50,000 people who volunteer in Sutton at least once each year.

“Sutton seems to lead the way nationally in terms of its volunteering engagement.

“We are lucky to have a lot of good charities and great volunteering opportunities in the borough.”

Meals on Wheels service and the Friends of Parks are both requesting for more volunteers to help deliver meals to the elderly and look after parks respectively.
