A lollipop lady who served the community for 50 years has died.

Florence Adams helped schoolchildren at St Mary's Junior and St Philomena's safely cross Shorts Road until she was 87, but died on June 19.

Her efforts were recognised with an outstanding achievement award from Sutton Council last year, and the schools she served held a special assembly for her in February to mark her half century.

Councillor Ruth Dombey, leader of Sutton Council, said: “We are very sad to hear of Florence’s death and want to pay tribute to her generosity of spirit.

“For 50 years Florence embodied all that was best in the borough, working selflessly in all weathers and putting the needs of others before herself. Under her watchful eye, generations of children crossed the road safely outside St Philomena’s High School in Carshalton. She will be greatly missed.”
