Thirty traveller caravans camped on Roundshaw Open Space have forced an international baseball tournament to be relocated less than a week before it was due to begin.

2015's London Baseball Tournament, hosted by Roundshaw Park's South London Pirates baseball team, would see 15 teams from the UK and across Europe battle it out for the 2015 trophy and was due to be held at Roundshaw Open Sapce over America's Independence Day weekend on both Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5.

However three weeks ago the first group of travellers drove around 10 vehicles onto the site. The number has now increased to around 30 caravans.

The travellers are believed to have entered the site by breaking a barrier lock at the end of Hannibal Way on the Sutton side of the Downs.

Earlier today South London Pirates announced the tournament will now take place at Farnham Park, Slough.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said the first steps to obtaining a court order against the travellers was submitted on Friday and has sought a meeting to discuss whether a change in the law can be put in place that will allow councils to take more swift action against illegal camp sites.

He said: "The number of traveller incursions and the level of fly-tipping that is often associated with illegal traveller sites is totally unacceptable.

"In dealing with the problem the council and the police have to follow tightly defined legal procedures. "I am seeking a meeting with Baroness Williams of Trafford, the minister responsible for travellers to see whether there is any scope for changing the law to allow councils to take action more promptly to move travellers on and to provide greater powers to deter illegal encampments."
