A 'guard of honour' was held to commemorate a lollipop who saw children safely to school for 50 years.

Children from St Philomena's High School for Girls and St Mary's Catholic school held a guard of honour for Florence Adams, who worked for the schools for 50 years before she died on June 19.

Mrs Adams was believed to be England's longest serving lollipop lady when she died aged 87.

The procession was held at 9.30am Friday where the hearse containing Mrs Adams' coffin drove past the children, who were lined up past the schools' gate and along Shorts Road, before stopping at her home only a few hundred metres from the schools.

Several parents and former pupils then placed flowers by her house.

Contributions have been made towards the flowers and a memorial plaque being designed for permanent display on the wall outside the schools.

Maria Noone, head teacher of St Philomena’s School said: "She was a strong role model and showed how our young women should live their lives through her service to our pupils."

Following the procession, the funeral was held at 10am at the Stanley Park Evangelical Church, Stanley Road, Carshalton.
