A Yorkshire terrier has been rescued by Brit school pupils after being discovered cowering in a sealed bin.

The tiny dog was found on Friday morning on Edith Road, South Norwood and has appropriately been named Ed.

The school children heard barking and whining coming from the bin, and on opening the lid, found Ed scrabbling to get out.

They took him to school and called the RSPCA.

RSPCA workers have said is unclear how long he had been trapped, but a vet found him thin with overgrown nails.

Inspector Lucy Chillery said: "It’s hard to believe that anyone could leave a dog in a bin and walk away; poor Ed must have been absolutely terrified.

"He is such a lovely little fella and wearing a collar and lead, but sadly no tag or microchip.

"It makes you wonder whether this was carried out by the owner or if this dog has been maliciously taken and abandoned. It is a mystery we really want to solve.

"When we took him to a vet, he was found to be thin with overgrown nails and in need of a dental check and a bath, but otherwise was bright and alert and in good health which is a relief.

"He is now receiving lots of fuss and attention while we investigate. We would like to thank the pupils for their efforts in saving this little dog."
