New names will be added to the Belmont War Memorial to honour more people who died during World War Two.

Currently the memorial, in Queens Road, Belmont, has the names of 41 servicemen who died in the First World War and one from the second.

Now the Belmont branch of the Royal British Legion has been granted permission to add new names to this list of heroes and is looking for the community's help in compiling and verifying people from the area who died during the second world war.

Peter Mattey, Belmont branch British Legion committee member said the first hurdle was getting permission from the council to have the additional names added. They achieved this at the strategy and resources committee of Sutton Council on Monday, June 29.

He said: "Now we have to validate the names and hopefully identify some more.

"There are 12 names from the Belmont Boys Brigade who we believe were killed in World War Two that we are looking to add and we believe there must be more.

"Validating people is very difficult as it is not always easy to know if somebody died during conflict."

The Belmont War Memorial, was designed by the architect E.P. Archer and was unveiled on January 1, 1921.

The granite memorial has three bronze plaques, one with a rectangular addition fixed beneath the original.

All work will be funded by the Belmont branch of the British Legion.
