A damning report by a healthcare watch dog has listed significant concerns at a Sutton care home.

Southdown nursing home run by Melba Wijayarathna provides care for 20 people who require specialist care needs relating to dementia, strokes, diabetes and other conditions.

But a report published by the Care Quality Commission earlier this month found serious failings at the Dorset Road-home and the independent regulator is considering taking action against the provider.

The inspection found the nursing home required improvement in most areas of care and was inadequate in providing a safe service.

One of the many concerns was some people at the home may have been at risk of malnutrition as their food intake was not properly managed.

The service provided was also deemed unsafe and at least one person at the home had sustained an injury after trapping their finger in their bed rails.

Some parts of the home were also unclean and that in these areas people were at risk of infection.

The report did offer some praise, stating staff "respected and promoted people's privacy and dignity" and some feedback from families of those in the home were complimentary about the service.

Mrs Wijayarathna said: "Southdown Nursing Home has been under our management for nearly 30 years now and our record with the CQC has been impeccable.

"The recent inspection, where failings had come to light, ironically had a majority of its roots in a transitionary period of an extensive remodelling and extension of the home.

"We've invested more than £350,000 into the environment and services within the home for the well-being and the overall outcome of all our service users - and this, happily, is now complete."

It is understood a second inspection by the CQC has taken place at Southdown Nursing Home.

A spokesman for the watchdog said any results of such an inspection would not be published until later this year.
