A personal trainer who had just taken a ninja skills lesson was left fuming after being asked to leave a coffee shop for wearing leggings and a sports bra.

Davina Ward, 35, was dressed in her gym kit and sitting with a friend in Costa Coffee, Sutton High Street, when a member of staff asked her to cover up.

With nothing else to wear, Ms Ward claims she was then asked to leave the shop, and that staff were initially reluctant to refund her for both coffees.

Costa Coffee has apologised for any offence caused and said it was investigating the incident.

Ms Ward said: “I’ve never been so angry in my life... I’m absolutely fuming.

“Why would they let me sit down and then embarrass me by telling me to leave?”

The trainer, who lives in Kensington but was in Sutton visiting a friend for the “ninja” class, said she had never experienced any problems with how she dressed.

After leaving Costa, she and her friend went for coffee at Starbucks and then for a Nandos but Ms Ward said it was likely be her last Sutton supper.

She said: “I spend all my life in my gym kit, that’s how I get most of my business.

“I feel like I’ve been thrown out on the basis of being fit and healthy.

“I don’t see myself coming back to Sutton much – I’ll stick to west London.”

The Costa barista involved in the incident said she had not asked Ms Ward to leave the store, but simply to cover up.

Although there had not been any complaints made to staff, other customers had been heard talking about how the personal trainer was dressed.

The barista said: “It’s health and safety, and common sense. We have plenty of people coming in from the gym, [it wasn’t] because it was a bra and because it was a girl.

“I wouldn’t allow anyone to sit in without a top.”

The barista said there had been some confusion over the refund for the coffees, because she was unsure whether Ms Ward’s friend – a regular at the store – might be staying to finish his drink.

Kerry Parkin, Costa’s head of communications, said the company was investigating the incident, and apologised to Ms Ward for “any offence caused”.

She said: “We’d like to assure customers that our stores are warm and welcoming environments and we will be looking to reassess our training policy with our teams immediately.”
