The son of a couple murdered in a terrorist attack while holidaying in Tunisia has said his father would be “over the moon” with a football tournament held in his honour.

Plenty of people turned out to pay their respects

John and Janet Stocker were among 30 Britons killed when gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire at a beach resort near Sousse on June 26, leaving 38 people dead.

Mrs Stocker, 63, worked at the North Cheam branch of Sainsbury’s, while her husband, 74, was a member of Sutton United’s walking football club. The couple lived in Sussex.

Last Friday, the Surrey FA held the John Stocker walking football six-a-side memorial tournament at Borough Sports Ground in Gander Green Lane, to honour the couple and raise money for the Stocker family.

The couple’s son, Mark, said: “The tournament was fantastic and I know my dad would be over the moon about a tournament has been named after him.

“He so enjoyed his day at football and met so many new friends there.

“It was great to see so many people play in Dad’s honour and a privilege to be here.”

A minute’s silence was held before the day’s games kicked off.

According to Surrey FA’s website, walking football is “non-contact and anyone that sprints, runs or jogs while the ball is in play will be penalised with a free-kick awarded to the other team”.

John O’Malley, Surrey FA’s football development officer for Croydon and Sutton, said: “The tournament was received really well by all the teams, all thankful that we were putting on the tournament but obviously aware and saddened as to the reasons behind the event.”

Mr O’Malley said at least £500 had been raised from the tournament, but that they were still receiving donations from players that had not been able to make it on the day.

Caterham were overall winners on the day, beating Walton on penalties in the final.
