Libraries, children's centres, free green waste collections - the people of Sutton must be wondering what will be next on the chopping block as cuts to services continue to bite.

After several years of cuts to and outsourcing of Sutton Council-run services residents may have to shoulder more of the burden of getting things done.

Some £43m has already been slashed from the council's annual budget, and £31m remains to be trimmed, in the second phase of the programme it is calling Sutton's Future.

The trimming has come off the back of dramtically reduced funding from central Government.

The question now being posed is: what can the authority persuade its taxpayers they should do for themselves?

Chief executive Niall Bolger said: "I think there's a sense of people have got used to services being provided.

"We have had to re-think the way that we provide public services. We want to engage and involve residents in those decisions."

Council leader Ruth Dombey said: "This isn't about dumping council services on volunteers. It's a far more complicated but more interesting conversation. How do you want to get involved to maintain the things that are most important to you?"

Conservative opposition leader Tim Crowley said: "I think we will put forward our suggestions on how to take the borough forward in a positive direction.

"This council are good at blaming everybody but themselves for their own cuts. They don't have to carry out as many cuts as they do if they priorities the services that they should be.

"They stuck a huge amount of money into their supposed green credentials without much coming back for it.

"We've not got the money to be airy-fairy and cuddly with some of these prioritisations."
