Beddington Park could be set to be transformed by millions of pounds of funding.

Sutton Council is preparing a detailed bid for £2.9m in lottery cash to overhaul the green space and return it to its “former glory”.

It expects to submit a detailed proposal for the major project to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) next month.

Plans for the park include improvements to entrance, access and parking, installing information panels, restoration of the Grange Garden and development of a garden space in the churchyard extension.

The bid has been prepared using a £251,000 grant secured from the HLF in 2014.

Coun Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the environment and neighbourhood committee, said she hoped the plans would preserve the “rich heritage and outstanding beauty”of the park for generations.

She added: “It has an amazing history and we’re all very excited about how that will be brought to life. Visitors told us how they thought the park could be improved and we have worked hard to put together a compelling bid.”

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “We are working on that bid and expect to submit it to the Heritage Lottery Fund next month. The grant would enable us to restore Beddington Park, its lakes and waterways to their former glory, extend the playground, repair footpaths and improve access to the park as well as providing a programme of activities, events and volunteer opportunities.”

Important archaeological finds dating to the Bronze Age have been found at the park, which also has a rich Tudor history.
