Schoolgirls showed they were great British bakers after creating unusual cakes as part of a “bio-bake off” to coincide with National Biology week.

Year 10 and sixth-form students at Greenacre School baked sweet treats in the shape of body organs in the school’s cookery room before uploading the photos onto the Physiological Society’s website.

The foetal cakes called “Bun in the Oven” depicted pregnancy at three and seven months, helped online votes during the competition.

The bakers were awarded cookie cutters, stationery and a magazine subscription, which the girls donated to the school library.

Great British Bake Off star Richard Burr, and panellist, said: “Impressive fondant foetus.”

Mrs Chambers, head of biology said: “I’m really proud of the girls.”
