A man has appeared in court charged with raping a woman in Belmont.
Damian Ray, 38, is alleged to have attacked the woman in The Crescent on August 2 last year.
He is also charged with two counts of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault against the same alleged victim on the same date.
Mr Ray, of Beech Grove, Epsom Downs, appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court yesterday to hear the charges against him.
He was joined in court by friends and family, including a woman who left the courtroom in tears as the charges against him were read out.
Mr Ray spoke only to confirm his name, age, and address, and to assure magistrates he understood his bail conditions and the date of his next court appearance.
He will next appear at Croydon Crown Court on June 8.
He was released on conditional bail under instructions not to contact the victim and not to enter The Crescent.
