A team of budding businessmen from a Sutton school went head-to-head with students all over the UK and came up trumps with their award-winning idea to solve an everyday problem.

Pupils at Sutton Grammar School for Boys developed and pitched an item-tracker as a way of solving the frustration of losing everyday valuables like keys, wallets and bags.

Their product, which they dubbed The Pin, is a small device you slip into your wallet, bag or onto a keyring that acts as a tracker if you misplace the items.

The items can be tracked via bluetooth through an app that the boys also developed, which alerts the owner of its whereabouts.

The 25-strong group of boys – together calling themselves Pinpoint Technologies – scooped the prize for innovation in IT at the Young Enterprise Company Final at the Emirates Stadium on July 7.

Student Luke Aitkin, described as the “brains behind the developing”, took home an award for outstanding achievement and the team was runner-up in the company of the year award.

Deputy managing director of the company, Asad Raja, 17, said: “We worked very hard on the product, and the structure of our 25-strong company really helped it be so successful.

“What drove us the most was the passion that we all have for the product. It feels amazing to get this recognition.

The Pin is available to download for iPhones and Android.

Around 20,000 students took part in the competition, with 14 teams battling it out for eight awards in the finals.
