Consultation on the future of one of Merton’s largest parks has opened.
The council is leading a review of Wimbledon Park, which comprises 27 hectares of green space, sporting facilities including an athletics track, and a nine- hectare lake.
Residents are being presented with two separate ‘concepts’ to be delivered through one of three ‘masterplans’.
The first concept, which envisages minimal change, would see the adoption of masterplan one, projected to cost about £12 million.
Existing uses of the sports facilities and lake would be retained, with the watersports centre demolished and replaced nearer to the athletics compound and the children’s play area concentrated in front of the White Pavilion.
The second concept looks to enhance the importance of the lake, and is reflected in tmasterplans two and three, which both involve more change, including moving the athletics track to the eastern end of the park and a number of other major building changes and landscaping work.
These latter two masterplans could each cost as much as £20 million.
Consultation began on July 3 and will finish on August 22.
Officers will be available to answer questions on each proposal at events at the park bowls pavilion on July 26, 4.30-7.30pm and August 14, 11am-3pm.
