A primary school pupil has been left a “broken little boy” after being assaulted by a member of a staff, his mother has said.

Daniel Wood, 10, was told to “shut up” and slapped across the chest while playing football at Rushy Meadow Primary School in Carshalton.

The female school worker was cautioned by police for common assault and battery of a child following the March 8 incident.

Daniel’s mum Collette Power, 41, of Brooklyn Close, Carshalton, learned about the assault after receiving phone calls from parents of other pupils who witnessed it.

She said: “The children were playing football in the playground and he said he had scored a goal, and she said ‘no you didn’t’. Apparently she told him to shut up and he told her to shut up back. She slapped him across the chest.

“The other kids were telling her she was going to get fired for what she did.”

Miss Power reported the assault to the police on March 10. The member of staff accepted a caution on June 21.

The assault triggered an internal investigation at the Rushy Meadow Lane school, which is told Miss Power the employee involved was no longer “on the premises”.

In a statement issued to the Sutton Guardian, head Kay Campbell said: “Rushy Meadow Primary School is currently carrying out an internal investigation according to our policies and procedures and as a result we cannot comment further.”

She declined to confirm if the staff member had been suspended or sacked.

Following the assault, Miss Power has pulled both Daniel and his younger sister Sydney Corbin out of the school.

Sydney now attends Muschamp Primary School, Carshalton, and Daniel is waiting to start secondary school after sitting his Sats exams this term.

His mum fears the assault affected his performance during the crucial exam period.

She added: “His whole demeanour has changed since then. He has started to answer back and shouting, and he has become isolated.

“He is like a broken little boy.”
