A 64-year-old man is fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a quad bike in Hackbridge.

The pedestrian was critically injured in the crash in London Road at 11.20pm yesterday, police said.

The rider of the quad bike, a man in his 20s, and a pillion passenger, were also taken to hospital. They had minor injuries.

The crash happened close to temporary traffic lights near Hackbridge station.

Graham Thompson, who lives in London Road, said: "I saw fire engines and police cars go at about midnight. There were 19 to 20 flashing lights over the bridge.

"Police cordoned off the road outside by the lights, but I didn't see much else."

Childminder Catherine Haynes, of London Road, said the street had been blighted by collisions in the past.

She added: “My front room has been like a first aid room over the past few years. I’ve lived here for about 11 years and there have been some really bad accidents here.

“People come down the road too fast and you see people on their phones trying to overtake others down here and at night you hear motorcyclists revving up. It’s not uncommon to see cars going at 50mph on this 30mph road, the worst I saw was one going at 75mph.

“It’s not just at night either, it’s during school hours. Cars come down too fast along the road and it’s not safe for children and it worries me because something else is bound to happen.

“We really need a speed camera to be installed her soon. It is really bad for accidents.”

"It's a busy road during the day, but at night it's totally different."

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's serious collision investigation unit in Merton are investigating.

No arrests have been made.
