Raj Mohan, 39, owns News-Food and Wine in Glouster Road.

He said: "I have been here for ten years and there have always been groups of boys in the park and they mug people and ride their bikes up and down the road, but this is the first time something this serious has happened.

"We have told the council to close the park at night, and they did for a while, but they opened it again.

"It's left me afraid to leave at night, I used to close up at nine, but now I leave at eight. I could get mugged, or worse."

A woman who lives in Gloucester Road, but did not want to be named, said: "I saw the flashing lights outside, but I thought nothing of it. I thought it was fireworks.

"Then I heard a 'bang, bang, bang' and looked outside and saw three police cars. I never thought anything like this could happen here, not anything like this."

Officers in Croydon tweeted earlier on Monday evening: "Units responding to reports of multiple stabbings on Gloucester Road. Expect road closures and delays in the area."
