Sutton police are seeking to reassure residents following recent violent attacks in the borough.

A statement from deputy borough commander Fran Smith was released one day after a 24-year-old man was stabbed in Plough Lane, off Sutton High Street, at about 5.30pm on Tuesday, November 23.

Two boys, aged 14 and 15, were arrested the same day under suspicion of attempted murder.

Deputy borough commander Fran Smith said: “Over the last few days we have seen a number of incidents involving violence in our borough including two serious assaults in the Town Centre.

“They are all separate incidents and for them to happen in a short period of time is extremely rare. I would like to reassure residents that we are working hard to investigate these crimes as thoroughly and as quickly as possible.

“The bigger picture is that crime in Sutton is continuing to fall.”

“Our approach over recent years has been to work closely with residents and local communities to make Sutton even safer. We are determined to keep crime low and keep Sutton as one of the safest boroughs in London.”

Figures that are released by the Metropolitan Police in October each year show that crimes committed in Sutton have fallen by 2.7 per cent to 10,832 compared to 11,132 that were committed last year.

Violent crimes against other people, domestic crime, gun crime and burglary fell in 2016 from 2015, but rape, sexual assaults and homophobic crimes did increase slightly in the same period.
