Derelict Victoria House is set to be demolished to make way for a £28m redevelopment.

The North Cheam eyesore at the crossroads of London Road and Malden Road has been empty since 2006 and has been repeatedly defaced by vandals.

After it was vacated 10 years ago it has passed between private developers, but little progress had been made until this year.

Since 2014 the land has been under the ownership of Home Group who want to build 90 new homes, 12 of which will be affordable, that will be made up of one, two and three bedroom properties.

Another three commercial unites will be provided on the ground floor and will have 50 car parking spaces and 150 cycle spaces.

In March Joe Richardson, the head of delivery at Home Group, told the Sutton Guardian: “When we came into ownership of the building in 2014 we knew that we could improve upon the previous plans which had been approved.

“We understand the community’s frustration that Victoria House has remained unused since 2006 and we know this is an important site to the community, which desperately wants to see the site brought back into use.”

However, months later the site remains undeveloped.

Emma Barker, Development Manager at Home Group said: “Home Group want to replace the derelict Victoria House with a development which will benefit the existing residents and businesses of North Cheam and create a warm and positive welcome for people entering the Borough of Sutton.

“We have been working with the police to try to keep the empty buildings secure, but the only long-term solution to the anti-social behaviour and blight that the derelict site is causing is serious investment and high quality development bringing the site back into long-term use.

"We are hoping that local people will support our proposals.”
