A Liberal Democrat councillor will not face disciplinary action for failing to declare her directorship for nearly three years, although calls remain for her to step down from her role as chairwoman of appeals.

Nighat Piracha, ward member for Beddington North, waited until December 2016, to declare her role as director in KMCNR Properties Services Ltd.

Councillors must disclose any interests within 28 days of taking up office.

Records listed at Companies House show Cllr Piracha held the position since February 1, 2013, more than a year before she was elected to council in May, 2014.

Companies House records also show KMCNR’s accounts have been overdue since April 30, 2016 and that it received notice to be struck off  in July 2016, which would lead to the company being dissolved.

Strike-off action was discontinued in October, 2016.

Failure to make up your accounts can affect your credit rating, result in a fixed penalty fine and the company being taken to court.

Ruth Dombey, the leader of Sutton Council, said: “Cllr Piracha has confirmed that she has received no remuneration for the directorship she has now declared on the register of interests and that the company concerned has had no dealings with the council.

“She apologises for the fact that she didn't declare this unpaid directorship and has updated her entry on the register.”

Tim Crowley, leader of the Conservative opposition at Sutton Council said: “I do think that her being on the chair of appeals is very difficult for her as people can bring up her failure to declare her interests against her.

“She can be on other committees, but I do think she should step down.”
