London could be covered in snow by Thursday, January 12 according to forecasters.
The Met Office has issued warning that snow could hit the capital as rain moving eastwards across the south may turn to snow.
The snow could cause disruption to road, rail and air services as well as interruptions to power supply.
Widespread ice is also expected to form rapidly on untreated surfaces during the night.
Only two days ago it looked like London might be spared from the upcoming snow showers set to hit coastal regions across the country.
The Met Office chief forecaster admitted that even now there is a great deal of uncertainty over the track and intensity of upcoming weather, saying that confidence is low in the amount and extent of any snow.
Associated heavy rain and strong winds may prove additional hazards even if the snow doesn't fall.
