Logs branded as “ridiculous” have been replaced with metal benches six years after they were fitted in Sutton High Street during a £3.2m redevelopment.

Workmen removed the logs that had been a feature of the 2010 redevelopment and were seen to replace them with metal benches on Tuesday, January 10.

The benches had been criticised for not having backs or handles on them by Evelyn Rider who was taken to accident and emergency after she fell off a log bench that had not been properly locked in place in 2010.

She later called the renovation “a total waste of time”.

Tim Crowley, leader of the Conservative opposition at Sutton Council, said: “Well, it logs very difficult for Sutton Council. They are rolling back their previous policy, not only did they cut down a perfectly good tree to put in Sutton High Street, but they have taken it out as well, which isn’t very green.

“We said the logs were ridiculous and it’s not very well liked. I’m glad they are gone because it did not help people with bad balance. I’m glad the council listened to us.

“But why has it taken six years for them to remove them? It beggars belief.”

The Transport for London-funded redevelopment led the organisation to change its guidelines for major project developments following numerous delays and accidents.

Sutton Council set up an internal audit to investigate issues that arose during the redevelopment.

A council spokesman said: “We repair and replace street furniture when needed to make sure it looks its best.

“We are replacing the log benches in the High Street since being installed six years ago.

“Work to replace the benches started this week and work is due to be completed before the end of next week.

“We thank residents for their patience whilst we install the new benches.”
