After turning down an eye-watering multi-million pound contract for a Chinese super club, Premier League star Dimitri Payet appears to have opted for a much more modest role – installing tiles at Sutton United’s clubhouse.

It was only on closer inspection did manager Paul Doswell realise that Sutton hadn’t pulled off the transfer coup of the century, but that the West Ham United playmaker was in fact B&Q worker and Payet-doppelganger David Bannister.

He was visiting Gander Green Lane to donate tiles for Sutton’s clubhouse ahead of Sunday’s historic FA Cup tie with Leeds United.

The donation came after manager Doswell, possibly expecting some illustrious guests to be visiting during the side’s remarkable FA Cup run, mentioned in an interview that the clubhouse needs a makeover.

Mr Bannister, in fact a B&Q acting deputy store manager, said: “It’s been amazing to come down to Sutton and provide them with the tiles they need.

“The club has done absolutely amazing on this cup run, and we wish them all the success for the upcoming Leeds game on Sunday. Come on the U’s.”

Preparations at Sutton are well underway for the crunch tie with Leeds, with the club having booked a place in the fourth round having knocked out neighbouring AFC Wimbledon last week.

The match is only the third time in Sutton’s history they have reached the fourth round of the famous cup.
