The windfall from the FA Cup will not be wasted according to Sutton United’s chairman who said the club ‘is too responsible to do that’.

Bruce Elliot told the Sutton Guardian he had often been thinking about the money, but that it would be invested back into the club and not spent on players.

The comments were made after the U’s banked £300,000 from TV fees and prize money from their fourth-round tie against Leeds United.

Mr Elliott said: “Normally it’s a matter of thinking about where the extra money is going to come from to pay for certain projects. There are lots of jobs at the club that need doing.

“It’s a big club inside and out and it takes a lot of maintenance and there will be a half a dozen things that have been talked about on the wish list that never quite got to the top of the list.

“Things like the toilets and changing rooms will be looked as well as the floor in the function room. It has also been well documented that Paul (Doswell) lent the club money for the 3G pitch as part of a 10-year repayment plan.

“We’ll have a chat with Paul about bringing forward those repayments instead of spreading the loan over that time frame. We’ll definitely want to sit down and discuss a revised repayment with him once things calm down.

“It’s all very boring answers, but we’ve seen it at other clubs over the years. When they’ve had a bit of windfall money they have just wasted it.

"It won’t be splashed on new players, I like to think this club is too responsible to do that.”

Sutton United will face Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round at Gander Green Lane on Monday, February 20. The match will be shown live on BBC One from 7.55pm.
