Wimbledon has the highest rate of teenagers applying to university in the country, as statistics show chances of applying for a degree course varies heavily depending on where you live.

According to Ucas data, 70.3 per cent of 18-year-olds in Wimbledon had applied to university by the January 15 deadline.

Richmond Park had the second highest application rate, with 65.6 per cent of 18-year-olds applying for a degree.

Wandsworth borough also ranked highly, with the constituencies of Putney, Battersea and Tooting ranking in the top ten per cent.

Altogether, ten constituencies around south London and north Surrey made it into the top ten per cent for university applications.

None of them were listed in the bottom ten per cent, which showed the lowest application rate was found in the Hampshire constituency of Havant, where just 17.4 per cent of 18-year-olds applied for university this year.

London as a whole had the highest rate of university applications in the country at 47 per cent, while the south west had the lowest with 32 per cent.

Founder and executive chairman of the Sutton Trust, Sir Peter Lampl, said: “The massive difference between the top and bottom constituencies reflects the fact that the chances of getting to university are very much dependent on where you live and where you go to school.”

A spokesman from the Department of Education said application rates for 18-year-olds and those from more deprived backgrounds were at record levels, and new reforms being brought in would lead to even more applications.

The Ucas data was analysed by the Press Association, and based on statistics from around England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It did not include students from Scotland, where a large proportion of higher education is provided by Scottish colleges and not included in Ucas data.
