A furious motorist was enraged to find his car slapped with a £110 fine - after he parked outside his own house.

Charlie Holding, 52, was looking for a space in the cul-de-sac where he lives one evening when he found a van parked opposite his house on Halloween.

After scouring the area around Alexandra Avenue, Sutton, for another space to park, Charlie parked with two wheels on the kerb to avoid blocking the narrow road.

But the next morning, he found he had been slapped with the fine, despite not blocking either the street or pavement.

The minicab driver said: "We have a driveway, but sometimes we have to park in front of the house.

"It's a narrow cul-de-sac, and there was a big van parked opposite, so leaving the car outside our house would have blocked the road.

"I parked with two wheels on the kerb so I wasn't blocking the street - if I'd parked without doing so, it would have stopped traffic coming through completely.

"Legally speaking, Sutton Council are fair enough to fine me, but bearing in mind the circumstances, it's out of order."

Charlie says after he received the fine the next morning, on November 1, he challenged the council both informally and formally but had his appeals rejected.

He is now going to challenge them through the independent Traffic Penalty Tribunal.

Charlie added: "The council say I should have parked somewhere else, but I tried to.

"I couldn't really park anywhere else because at the end of the street is a main road with lots of buses.

"It's really unfair that I've been fined for parking in front of my own house.

"The council also argue that being on the kerb blocks buggies and pedestrians from passing, but I made sure there was space."

Sutton Council has been contacted for a comment.
