Sutton United has taken down its website after it was hacked and is ‘just another problem the club could do without’ according to the U’s chairman.
Hacker Lazmania61 called former Sutton United Wayne Shaw player the ‘best goalkeeper’ and made other changes to the club’s website during the cyber attack.
It is understood the unauthorised changes took place on the weekend before the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Arsenal at Gander Green Lane.
The website was taken down for maintenance on Tuesday, February 21, and has remained offline since.
The hacker changed the bio next to Mr Shaw's picture to “BEST GOALKEEPER” and claimed responsibility in the club’s fixtures section.
Sutton United’s strong performance during the 2-0 loss against the Gunners, on Monday February 20, was overshadowed after Mr Shaw became embroiled in a betting scandal after he was filmed eating a pie during the match.
He has since resigned from the club pending an FA investigation.
Sutton United chairman Bruce Elliott said: “Something went wrong over the weekend and our maintenance guys are looking into fixing it. It’s extremely frustrating as now is the time where we could do with it up as well.
“I don’t know when the website will be back up and running and I don’t know about any changes that were made to the site.
“It’s just another problem that we could do without really.”
