Tory leader, Tim Crowley, said the centre-left party would use any phone numbers, email addresses and postcode information to approach people over political issues that would benefit the party ahead of the next general election.

The email shared on Tuesday, February 21, by Ruth Dombey, the Lib Dem leader of the council, would take peoples’ comments and present them in a booklet to the non-league club.

Further down the page a disclaimer added respondents would be consenting to Lib Dem representatives contacting them.

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, tweeted a link to the page with a caption reading “share now”. Cllr Crowley said: “It’s been hijacked, they (Sutton Lib Dems) have no shame.

“They will jump on any bandwagon, it’s disgraceful that they have done this when we should be celebrating the community’s achievement.

“It is being done to collect as many emails and phone numbers so they can bombard people ahead of the next election.”

Cllr Dombey said: "Sutton United have inspired us all on this magical FA Cup run and we want to show them just how proud residents are of their fantastic achievement.

“This is simply a way of collating messages which will be presented to the club in a booklet. We're all so proud of our club and we feel like this will be a lovely way to commemorate their brilliant run. Not everything in life is about politics.

“It is a legal requirement to include a data protection statement whenever we ask for someone's details".

Cllr Dombey has been approached again for comment about whether anyone who submitted their details would be contacted by the Lib Dems in the future.
