Time is running out to register to vote in the general election next month.

Prospective voters only have until 11.59pm on Monday, May 22, to sign up to cast their ballot in the snap election.

If you are unsure how to register then our Q and A guide might help you.

When is the general election?

Thursday, June 8

Am I eligible to vote?

You can vote in the election if you are:

• a British, Irish or commonwealth citizen

• a resident living in the UK or a British citizen abroad who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years

• aged 18 or over on Thursday, June 8

• not legally excluded from voting

I’ve not moved house since I last voted, do I need to re-register?

If you have not moved then it is unlikely that you will need to register again to vote on election day.

But if you want to make sure, you can check with your council’s electoral registration officer here to see if you are signed up.

I have moved house since the last election, how do I register to vote?

I’m really busy, does it take a long time to fill out the forms?

Don’t worry. You will be asked to fill out your name, address, National Insurance number and whether you want a postal vote. You may also need details enclosed in your passport.

It should take about five to 10 minutes to complete.

How do I go about voting on election day?

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on election day and are usually found in public buildings, such as schools or halls.

When you arrive give your name and address to staff. You will then be given a ballot paper with a list of candidates.

Fill out the paper and vote and put it in the ballot box.

I won’t be able to cast my ballot in person, are there any other ways I can vote?
