An elderly driver was left shaken after a car and an ambulance crashed at a junction just metres away from Sainsbury’s in Stafford Road, according to a witness.

The collision happened at the junction between Woodcote Road and Hawthorne Road shortly before 6pm on Sunday, May 21.

An image posted on the Wallington Facebook group reveals the passenger’s side of the car and the ambulance’s bonnet had been damaged in the smash.

It also showed a long queue of traffic along Stafford Road as officers closed the two roads while paramedics treated the car’s driver for minor injuries.

Witness Jon Blay told the Sutton Guardian it appeared the ambulance was transferring a patient.

He said: “It looked as though the ambulance was entering the junction on the wrong side of the road.

“The elderly driver of the car seemed severely shaken up, but it wasn’t obvious that he had been wounded. His car horn was jammed for about 25 minutes.

“Staff in the ambulance were in scrubs, so it looked as though it was a surgical transfer.

“The blockage wasn’t cleared until around 10.30pm after several visits from several break-down trucks.”

The London Ambulance Service has been approached for an update about the driver’s condition.
