Age UK Sutton staged a Knit-In on Thursday 25 May as part of the Big Knit. The Mayor of Sutton Jean Crosby and Tracey Jacques, Asda Sutton’s Community Champion joined Age UK Sutton staff, volunteers and members of the Purls of Wisdom knitting group to knit and crochet tiny hats to top innocent smoothie bottles.

It was an enjoyable afternoon, with knitters fueled by treats generously donated by Asda Sutton. For some – like the Mayor of Sutton and Asda Community champion Tracey – it was a triumphant return to the knitting needles, as they both finished their hats, topped with bobbles, in record time.

In the end, counting all the hats knitted by the ladies of Purls of Wisdom and the Knit-In contributions, there were over 300 tiny hats ready to grace the tops of smoothie bottles. A veritable hat mountain!

The hats were given to Age UK Sutton, who ae participating in the Big Knit for the very first time. Each hat sent to innocent smoothies by Age UK Sutton carries with it a 25p donation.

The charity hopes to send 2000 hats to innocent by 3 July, to raise vital funds to help it continue its work helping older people in the London Borough of Sutton.

Sutton residents can get involved in the Big Knit by knitting or crocheting a small hat and sending it to Age UK Sutton at Unit 2, Lower Square, St.Nicholas Way, Sutton SM1 1EA.
