Sutton's MP has asked the council for "assurances" over the safety of Sutton's tall buildings in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Paul Scully - who was re-elected last week - issued a statement which includes a mention of Chaucer House, which was re-clad recently to improve its appearance.

An event in October last year marked the completion of redevelopment work to Chaucer House which was part of a £13 million social housing project.

Mr Scully seeked clarification that such buildings “are not vulnerable to similar occurrences” to the huge fire in Grenfell Tower in West London in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He said: “My thoughts, and I’m sure the thoughts of everyone in Sutton, Cheam and Worcester Park, are with those caught up in the fire, especially the family and friends of those who have lost their lives.”

The MP has also asked that “all safety measures” be examined to avoid a similar tragedy.

Niall Bolger, chief executive of Sutton Council, responded to Mr Scully's enquiries and confirmed that Chaucer House has a state of the art sprinkler and fire protection system.

Her added: "Fire risk assessments are undertaken by an independent contractor on an annual basis and in addition, Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP) undertake quarterly fire risk assessments.

“To give every assurance, the Council has well developed and well rehearsed emergency plan which is designed in line with the London Resilience Procedures.”

Mr Scully told Sutton Guardian: "There are clear differences between the two blocks in Sutton in layout and the fact that sprinklers are installed here. However more detail is required to investigate such as what fire stops exist between the previous failing cladding and the new cover on Chaucer House.

"We should not unduly worry local residents but neither will I ignore their ongoing safety. We need to make sure that the government and local councils move quickly and act decisively to avoid a repeat of this terrible tragedy."

After the fire in Kensington, Sutton Housing Partnership advised residents to read their latest fire advice which can be viewed here http://www.suttonhousingpartnership.org.uk/YourProperty/SafetyandinsuranceInformation/SafetyandInsuranceInformation.aspx
