An event in Trinity Square in Sutton High Street on Monday celebrated the upcoming Armed Forces Day (Saturday June 24).

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Marlene Heron, Deputy Lieutenant, Christopher Goodwin, Council Leader, Cllr Ruth Dombey and the Council’s chief executive, Niall Bolger, along with representatives from the Armed Forces and police attended the event.

Deputy Mayor Heron told onlookers, “Your support for the Armed Forces provides a much-needed morale boost for our troops and their families.

“The UK Armed Forces work magnificently for the UK and its interests. They put themselves in harm’s way to protect our way of life and defend our nation’s interest.

“Our Armed Forces are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivery aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism. They work in difficult, dangerous and unpleasant conditions, away from their families and the luxuries we take for granted."

Deputy Lieutenant, Christopher Goodwin, stated: “Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to bring families together and a chance for the public to show their support.

“The sacrifice they make on our behalf is something everybody needs to understand and I hope that Armed Forces Day will help everyone to recognise and appreciate this. Their contribution to our safety and security is immense and we owe them all a huge debt.”
