The cladding at one of Sutton's tower blocks will not be tested as part of the current nationwide testing programme because it is a different type to that which covered Grenfell Tower.

Residents of Balaam House, in Collingwood Road, were told in a letter yesterday (June 27) that it was being sent for separate independent testing.

The letter, sent jointly by Sutton Council, Sutton Housing Partnership and London Fire Brigade said: "As soon as we are able to get the results, we will communicate them to you."

On Monday the cladding samples were extracted from Balaam House and sent for testing to the Building Research Establishment.

The letter assured residents that new fire safety patrols would undertake a 24 hour, seven day a week fire safety patrol, a fire sprinkling system will be retrofitted and fire alarms will be placed in communal areas of the building.

A smoke detection system is also being commissioned for every flat, according to the letter.

Early this week, residents of Balaam House told Sutton Guardian they were living in fear.
