A large fire has destroyed much of Weybridge Hospital.

Hundreds of residents have been evacuated to the Weybridge Centre in Churchfield Road after the blaze took hold just before midnight.

Witnesses reported hearing at least four explosions – with one claiming the bangs were loud enough to be heard in Addlestone.

The fire spread across all three floors of the building, Surrey Fire and Rescue stated.

No one has been injured as a result of the blaze, Surrey Police confirmed.

Roads around the building, including Weybridge High Street are closed, and are likely to remain so “for some time”, the force added.

Weybridge Library will also be closed until further notice.

Firefighters from eight fire stations scaled two aerial ladder platforms to try to get the fire under control.

Councillor Lewis Banks posted on Twitter that he had heard at least four explosions with people speculating that oxygen tanks in the hospital were igniting.

Deputy leader of Elmbridge Borough Council, Andrew Davis, shared a video of the fire on social media, and added: “The whole hospital is now in flames and the top floor has gone. The firefighters are drawing water from four streets.”

A witness at the scene this morning told the Surrey Comet the surrounding area was “incredibly smoky” and that police officers had to wear masks to protect themselves from the fumes.

As firefighters tackled the blaze at the hospital, their colleagues from Surrey Fire and Rescue fought another large fire at a stables in Ockham.

At least ten pumps were sent to that fire, a firefighter at Banstead fire station told the Surrey Comet.

An investigation into the cause of the hospital fire is now underway.

Matt Leisegang, who was evacuated from his home about 100 metres from the blaze, said he heard a “loud bang” and saw the top floor of the building “engulfed”.

The 28-year-old told the Press Association: “It was about 11.45pm when my wife woke me up and said there was a fire at the hospital.

“We heard people shouting outside and went to look through the window. We saw what was happening and ran down to see if we could help.

“That’s when I saw the left side of the roof was in flames already. Within about 15 minutes, the whole of the roof was alight.

“The building is only three storeys, and the top floor was completely engulfed in flames within a short time – that was the remarkable thing, how quickly the fire spread.

“Within about 40 minutes of the fire, the whole of the top floor was gone. I could only see flames.”

The personal chef added: “We were asked by the emergency services to move back – there was a loud bang, an explosion from the gas canisters.

“The firefighters have been brilliant, and I said to my wife that we should make some tea and sandwiches for them but we were told to evacuate before we could do anything.

“Everyone seems to be safe. There are about 30 people in the church, there were some children earlier but they have been sent to stay with relatives. We’re just thankful nobody seems to have been hurt.”

Martin Steele, chief operating officer at NHS property services, said: “We are grateful to the emergency services for their swift response to this fire, and our local teams who were onsite in the early hours of this morning.

“We are assisting Surrey Fire and Rescue and the local police in their investigations to establish the cause of this fire as soon as possible. While the investigation is underway, we will secure the hospital site with the local police.

“We are also helping North West Surrey CCG and CSH Surrey to make alternative arrangements for delivery of the local healthcare services.”
