The first council houses in over 30 years have started to be built in the borough in a £28 million programme.
93 homes will be constructed across three sites, Alcester Road in Wallington, Fellowes Road in Carshalton, and Richmond Green in Beddington.
According to the council, 90 per cent of the homes will be affordable.
Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of Sutton Council’s housing committee, said: “This truly is a groundbreaking event. It’s been almost 30 years since the last council houses were built in the borough not through lack of political will but lack of funding opportunities.
“But now we can deliver, I am proud that we have demanded high quality design that will provide an excellent living environment for residents, enhances the local streetscape, and maximises the number of affordable homes to rent.”
Joint Managing Director of Kind & Company, Tony Battle, said: “We are delighted to be working with Sutton Council on this groundbreaking project delivering quality homes for local people.”
The borough’s last council housing was built in 1989 at Crownbourne Court in St Nicholas Way in Sutton.
