A Sutton mum has complained to the council about the safety of a park in Carshalton.

Sarah Rigglesford, 32, last visited the St Helier Open Space playground on Saturday (July 22) with her seven year old daughter and ten month old baby.

She said: “Normally we play there on Saturdays but it seems to be deteriorating so much."

The mother said she is now reluctant to visit the park again until issues are resolved.

She elaborated: “One of the monkey bars is completely snapped off and it looks like someone tried to repair it with tape. One of the swings has been broken for quite some months too. It’s been chained up so it can’t be used.”

According to Sarah her daughter was “disappointed” when she couldn’t use the monkey bars properly.

“I guess it’s the council’s responsibility,” Sarah continued. “I’m disappointed they didn’t get back to me. It’s been really hard getting through to them. It was only when I added Tom Brake in on Twitter that they responded.”

A council spokesperson told Sutton Guardian: “The playground is very well used and inevitably there are occasional wear and tear issues. A couple of issues have already been reported to our maintenance contractor, a damaged swing chain and damaged swing hoop. The swing is temporarily out of action until it is repaired and made safe again.

“There was also some offensive graffiti which the contractor will be removing this morning (July 27).

“All of the park playgrounds are inspected by the grounds maintenance contractors trained staff daily for general issues such as obvious damage, glass, etc. and each monthly for a more detailed inspection of shackles, bolts and wear issues.

“The council also carries out an annual independent Rospa approved inspection as well as an inspection by the council’s insurers.”
