Southern Rail is “reviewing” proposed changes to Hackbridge services after an online petition opposed planned reductions to London Victoria during peak times.

The proposed changes for the 2018 timetables would have seen the Hackbridge to Victoria service from 7am to 10am drop to six trains from eight.

The evening peak service from 5pm to 9pm would have decreased from 13 trains to eight trains.

However, following the Save Our Hackbridge Trains campaign, which included 483 people signing a petition, Southern's parent company Govia Thameslink Railway has revealed it is now “reviewing the number of trains stopping (in Hackbridge) with a view to increase”.

Govia was unable to confirm whether the company would now commit to more services in Hackbridge.

It added there was no fixed date on when the proposed 2018 timetables would be finalised.

An online consultation document reads: “We need to formally submit our timetables to Network Rail by mid-August 2017.”

This date concerned Nikki Noodle who initiated the Hackbridge Rail User Group on Facebook before starting the petition.

She said: “I think they could be under time pressure. It took them six months to get feedback on the first round of consultation. To complete this in four weeks would be crazy.”

Regarding Govia’s statement of vowing to increase the train service in Hackbridge, Nikki remained cautious.

She added: “I will believe it when I see it. I’m definitely not opening the champagne yet. Being on the list is a good thing though. It’s a step in the right direction.”

Nikki reflected on the response from Hackbridge residents since starting the campaign just a few weeks ago.

She said: “People have been really supportive. Nobody I have talked to has been negative. Everyone thinks there should be more trains. No one thinks they should be cut.

“It’s not just the fact that they are cutting them, it’s that they are giving more trains to other people and less to us.”

A Govia spokesperson told Sutton Guardian: “We will have to review all the feedback from phase two of the consultation before we begin to produce our final 2018 service plan. The website link outlines some initial points of investigation but nothing more at this stage.”
