Proposals to build six flats and four houses on Carshalton High Street have been met with staunch opposition.

The Clore Group Limited have applied to demolish the existing gym, retain the barber shop and convert the existing premises at 9 to 13 High Street to build a development comprising of six flats and four houses.

Waste Operations Sutton sent a letter seeking more clarification in terms of refuse collection, which they described as “sparse at best”, before granting their support.

Rob de Castro, Senior Transport for Planner Sutton Highways, believes the proposals provide no off-street parking provision which may lead to an “overspill” of cars on surrounding streets.

He added: “In the absence of sufficient mitigation to justify the lack of off-street parking for a development which clearly fails to meet the requirements for car-free development (Policy MDM22) a refusal is recommended for the above reason.”

On the online application there are dozens of public letters expressing objections to the proposals.

One resident claimed that the development would restrict her view and day light from the top of her flat.

Someone else commented: “Carshalton already suffers with congestion and issues with parking (and) this will only make it worse.”

The Carshalton Society Committee also submitted their own objection. One of the cited reasons was a lack of parking and they believe the height of the building will “intrude the views from the ponds and the park”.

They also said the plans were not “sympathetic” with the conservation area of Carshalton.

The consultation period concludes on September 1.
