Sutton’s sweet toothed enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that an old fashioned pick 'n' mix store will open in the borough this month.

Charlie’s Sweet Stop will be the new addition to Station Road in Belmont with all the classic treats you would expect.

Lisa Kear, 37, moved to the area three years ago with her family from West Sussex as they established a pet business.

“We absolutely fell in love with the people since we’ve been here,” Lisa told Sutton Guardian. “It’s a great community and the community spirit is brilliant. I pride myself on getting to know the customers and I have become friends with quite a few of them.”

The premises, which is named after her grandson and was previously used as an office, is located next to Pet Stop which will continue to be operated by the family.

“There’s been a lot of excitement,” Lisa said. “We had the nursery around the corner visit the pet shop and when they were leaving I invited them to look at the sweet shop.

“I think the adults were even more excited,” she laughed.

The planned date for the opening day is Thursday, August 31, with opening times being 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.

Pick 'n' mix, retro jars, ice cream, sweet carts for hire, party bags, boxes of gift chocolates and an American section will all be held in the throwback store.

Lisa said she is “really excited” to finally open the business after contemplating the idea for a year.

“I’m really fat now though,” she laughed. “I’ve told myself I have to try everything in case a customer asks a question. But I’m really looking forward to it. I love working with the public, the village is such a friendly area.”

The jovial business owner added: “Already I’ve had one customer who rang and said she’s flying to Dubai on the Wednesday and asked could we open on the Tuesday and open a day earlier. Her children are all grown up but they just love pick and mix.”
