The general manager of a private members golf club in Sutton has spoken of his “relief” after being granted a five star food hygiene rating.

Sutton Council inspected Banstead Downs Golf Club on August 4 2017 after previously grading the dining room a one star in March this year.

“It was really frustrating,” general manager Bob Marchbanks said about being rated so poorly.

“It wasn’t representative of who we are. We are not a kebab shop in Sutton. We provide quality stuff.”

Issues with paperwork was the main reason Mr Marchbanks suggested why his business was initially awarded one star.

“It was a relief because the score was at worse a misunderstanding. We had certain issues with our paperwork and a couple of very minor things, but certainly nothing that warranted a one star.

“Thankfully, it’s now rectified. We were re-visited as soon as it reached the public eye.”

According to the general manager, he urged the council to re-inspect the premises immediately after the initial rating in March.

The Food Standards Agency operates the 0-5 ranking system, with five for establishments rated very good, four for good, three for generally satisfactory, two for improvement necessary, one for major improvement necessary and zero for urgent improvement necessary.

Despite being a private members club, outside functions are held with the room available to be hired for weddings and parties.

One reviewer on Facebook commented last week, “What a superb venue for a soiree. A hidden gem. Thank you to the chef who created a gluten free feast. It was delicious and it was lovely to be able to enjoy a buffet with friends.”

Mr Marchbanks added: “It’s a flexible venue. We can cater from 30 t0 120 people for different occasions.”

The private members golf club has been present 127 years.
