An 84-year-old woman was robbed in Worcester Park, suffering a broken finger and a suspected broken bone in her back.

She was walking through a tunnel under the railway lines into Lynwood Road on Thursday, September 7, between 1.30pm and 2pm when an unknown man pushed her to the ground and stole her handbag.

Inside the handbag was her red purse.

Police are looking for a man described as white, 5ft10 to 6ft tall, slim with short dark hair.

He was wearing a maroon coloured tee-shirt and a baseball cap at the time.

Epsom and Ewell Safer Neighbourhood Inspector Jackie Elkins said: “This was a shocking robbery of an elderly lady in the middle of the day that led her to suffering a broken finger and suspected broken bone in her back.

“We understand that this may cause concern in the area, however I would like to reassure residents that we are treating this seriously.”

Surrey Police is also issuing safety advice following the incident.

Inspector Elkins said: “If you do regularly walk alone, please be aware of your own personal safety and avoid using short cuts, keep to well-lit busy streets and consider carrying a personal attack alarm. More advice can be found on our website at”
