A new doctors' surgery could be coming to Belmont after a development plan was submitted to Sutton Council.

The site – the former Henderson Hospital on Homeland Drive – would provide 25 parking spaces with three four bedroom homes included.

Assura Medical Centres Ltd is the developer for the new surgery which would replace the existing Belmont facility.

A statement in its application reads: “The practice has outgrown its existing premises and has been actively seeking to relocate from their Belmont Surgery for several years. Unfortunately, suitable opportunities to relocate within their patient community have been very limited.

“The former Henderson Hospital site on Homeland Drive presents an ideal opportunity for the practice to enhance and expand the range of primary care services they currently offer.”

Assura acquired the site after the closure of Henderson Hospital and St George’s Mental Health Trust in 2009.

After this purchase, Assura was granted permission to construct a new medical facility to co-locate both Benhill and Belmont surgeries.

A portion of the site was then sold to a third-party developer who built new homes.

To access the proposed new medical centre, residents and surgery users would have to share the Moore Way via Hardegray Close.

However, residents near the site have issued their objections.

Concerns outlined by residents include:

  • Noise disruptions
  • Increase in traffic
  • Insufficient parking in relation to the size of the surgery
  • Lack of public transport to the site
  • Lack of carpark security at night
  • No gate into Hardegray Close (to separate residents and the cars entering the surgery)

One resident concluded: “We believe the residents would welcome a surgery on the site, but one designed which will work for the community and not just Assura’s financial objectives.”
