Two masked men 'stole' a deposit box from a security van at a Carshalton petrol station this morning.

Police were called to BP Garage in Green Wrythe Lane, at the junction with Nightingale Road, at 8.20am after reports of a robbery on a security van.

Reports say that two men wearing balaclavas were seen with a stolen transit deposit box, however it is not known whether any cash was inside.

Enquiries are ongoing into those who saw the suspects in Shaftesbury Road shortly after the incident.

A witness, who does not wish to be named, said: "I was in there paying for my petrol and I didn’t see if he was already there at the pump, or I don’t know, all I saw was that he [the suspect] came in as the guy [with the deposit box] was walking out of the shop.

"He [the masked man] grabbed the case off of him, the guy held on to it and they had a little bit of like a struggle between them.

"The guy with the mask on then barged him with it and then grabbed it and then just ran out. He just jumped straight into the car and went, and the guy [with the deposit box] shouted to his colleague, who was in a van outside. He jumped out but he [the suspect] was already gone.

"There was a lady next to me, she was just talking, and we just asked the guy [with the deposit box] if he was okay. Everyone was just a bit shocked really, there was an elderly lady and she ran to the back of the shop because she got scared.

The witness said they did not see the suspect pull anything out of their pocket which may have resembled a firearm or weapon.

They added: "It was about 8.20am in the morning, everyone is on the school run, and people are going to work. For them to do that I don’t know. It’s like they knew that they were going to be there.

"There were a few other cars at their pumps but he literally ran out of the shop with the case so fast into the car and went straight away, so nobody really could have done anything."

No injuries were sustained and no arrests have been made.
