A disused toilet block in Wallington could be set for a flush new use as plans have been submitted to turn it into homes.

Plans have been submitted to Sutton Council to turn the public convenience at Crosspoint House in Stafford Road into three new apartments.

The current total of 37 parking spaces would be reduced by four.

The 24-square metres of former loos and adjacent parking at what is predominately offices would become 197 square metres of flats – made up of two one-bedroom and one two-bedroom homes.

These are set to be anything but your bog standard homes – two of the three flats would have a balcony or terrace finished in non-slip eco-deck and all three have access to a communal garden rooftop featuring raised planters with integrated seating.

The rooms would have 2.5-metre ceilings, space for homeworking, rainwater collection and, the architects boast, lots of natural light.

In its design and access statement, the architect Smith and Newton Architects write: “The architectural language is of its time yet looks back to successful local precedents for inspiration and character.

“A robust and high quality design will contribute to the character of the locale and creates a pleasant and safe place to live.”

Access to the new homes would be off Clarendon Road. A consultation on the plans ends on December 1.
